A vast majority of the kits I build are originally hand me downs from people who were no longer interested and wanted to offload their kits but didn't want to throw them out. In fact a lot what I have are incomplete models that need a lot of surgery. This particular kit I volunteered to take on for a local anime club in order to make something that could be offered as a good display piece. It's going to be raffled off at the end of the quarter so I have some time before it happens.

This is missing the V fin, its gun, and has 6 points of articulation. On the other hand the detail on the face is really sharp. I'm planning on chopping it up to put into a dynamic static pose with some scratch built parts.

NY Toyfair 2011 Part 2

Today we look at some pictures of the prototype wing zero.

Articulation and stability presented in the legs on the prototype is about perfect. The sculpt and proportions make this one of the best Wing Zero renditions out there. It will be the best Wing Zero EW you can get outside of getting one of the model kits. I didn't have a chance to take pictures of certain things, but I can describe them. The Chest had what seems like 3 joints in the center to allow the torso to bend in an extreme manner. The sole purpose of the bend of course is so the Wing Zero can pull off its signature twin buster rifle pose. I actually cheated a bit with the wing zero pose since the position of the rifle triggers are too close for the hands to properly grip them at the same time. I think, and this is speculation that the wing zero might have a single molded double hand similar to virgo shakka's praying hands on the Saint Myth CLoth line. I took a look at the MG Wing Zero Custom in the other case to compare and noticed that it too cheats for holding the rifle for the pose. It relies on one hand trigger while the other hand simply rests against the underside of the rifle, where the rear portion is wedged into the upper lip of the torso camera eye.

Accessory wise the prototype comes with closed fists, open fists, and 2 trigger fists which can also hold the 2 beam sabers. The hilts of the beam sabers slot into the arm that holds one of the wings, but I was unable to do this because I only found one of the saber handles in the bag. Must have been lost on the way to New York.

Slightly unrelated, but I know people would like to see a size comparison of the new Megaman X from the D-Arts line. Well here it is in comparison to a coke bottle.

NY Toy Fair 2011 Part 1

As I've mentioned in the past conventions are nice pain in the ass to set up, but the effort is worth it because you generate an awesome booth. We spent the entirety of Saturday putting the booth together and preparing our display pieces. We were there literally from 9am all the way to 11pm and still didn't quite finish everything until the following morning before the show started.

We shipped a lot of product samples to New York, something like 20 boxes of stuff. Setting up always takes a while mostly because you have to pose the figures. There's actually quite a bit of thought that goes into this since presentation is everything. We had some help from a few local NY residents, many thanks. Tear down is faster since you only need to worry about positioning everything so it does not break in the storage containers.

Because of circumstances out of my control, I could not update this in a "live" format. So for now this is more of a backstage access to Bluefin and our support from Tamashii Nations. Working with new unreleased product is the greatest privilege out there ever and Bandai's Collector's division is dedicated to giving the U.S. some love that its citizens have been demanding. Many many yet to be released prototypes were flown in from Japan during Tamashii Features so they could be on display at New York. Let's take a look shall we?

New York Toy Fair Part 0

Hello all this is going to be the first in a small series of posts about New York Toy Fair.

This was my first trip in business class; a fairly nice experience. Shorter line for security during the peek morning hours, access to Unitied's lounge which has odourves and free wifi, and of course business class seating. The below photo shows what a ridiculous amount of space is given to you if you get the exit aisle. Yes I do think another pair of seats could have been added, but then I wouldn't have room to leisurely leave my junk on the ground.

Food consisted of a "green salad with choice of a balsalmic vinagarette or creamy garlic dressing" and "smoked salmon with capers rolled over asparagus on a bed of cucumber." Unfortunately I didn't have my camera out for the appetizers. I did however have it out for the Chicken, which I at this point cannot remember its name or description. T'wass good....and it was followed by dessert and coffee/tea. My boss had a stir fried shrimp with egg fried rice.

Upon checking into the hotel that night I couldn't help but think I was back in college.

Saturday comes the daunting task of setting up for the show. Will post some more soon!

PG Strike Freedom Early U.S. Launch

Hi everyone, the PG Strike Freedom is now available to U.S. retailers as of Dec 9. This makes it a whole 2 days before Japan release date, which is unprecedented on Bandai's part.

One of the more interesting aspects of working as a distributor is seeing a giant shipment of stuff arrive at your warehouse. Our product is Gundam mainly and when it arrives, it's quite a site to see. How it works is that a container with a large assortment of items leaves Japan once a month to head for the U.S.

Now it takes about 2 weeks or so for ocean freight, which means we typically get items almost half a month behind release date in Japan. especially if it leaves at the beginning of every month. There are items that are made to have earlier than Japan release date however to leave, and those get special treatment (PG Strike Freedom will be released in America a few days earlier than Japan at our urging. In fact it's already left Japan as I type this. Lucky California retailers will be able to sell it on Dec 11 with it physically in the U.S. already.) Other times an item will ship slightly earlier than usual for the U.S. or other countries so that it arrives at the same time it's officially released in Japan (e.g. HG00 Quanta, Zabanya, Harute).

As for the contents themselves, to be the most economical, we have to pack it until the container is as full as possible. This truck before we emptied it was literally full of boxes from end to end. The total after my superb count verification was 433 boxes.

Now for those who aren't familiar with how products are shipped they come in X quantity, not singles. For Gundam models they range anywhere between 4-60 models in a box, otherwise known as a master case. PG 00 and PG Strike Freedom come in a case of 4. While some like the EW HG 1/144 kits come in 42. Most retailers usually don't get master case quantity because it would take up a lot of inventory. However for a hot item, they will make an exception and take an entire case. Of course there's a case discount as an incentive :)

As you can see from the pictures, there's a LOT of Endless Waltz models that we ordered. We're just meeting the American market demand for these things so we have to get this much. One of the funny things I've discovered about American influence on Japanese production is that we have the power to ask Bandai to bump their production schedule up a notch on select items because they realize how high in demand models from series like Gundam Wing are. We stopped the plague of $120 HG Epyon models on ebay D: And now, Bandai is making an unprecedented move by having a large quantity of PG Strike Freedom as physical retail locations throughout the U.S. They've never done this before for the American market and I'm pretty happy to be part of that effort to spread GunPla in the U.S.

This is my first time attending an actual hobby trade show and not just an anime or comic convention. I spent oh about a week here, starting last monday.

One of the first things I noticed after landing in Chicago was that it's fairly chilly. Not Windy like the nick name, but just a feeling of cold. Thankfully I had packed a jacket so I was okay for the most part.
I snapped a few pictures at the airport, including this one where I'm on the outside and the bird is on the inside.

I stayed at the Embassy Suites in Rosemont, which is just directly across from the convention center. It's like 10 minutes away from the airport, very close. Because of how close this is, there is literally nothing by the convention center except hotels and expensive restaurants. Lots of steak houses. The cheapest meal I found in these places was $21. Thankfully some of the other restaurants were more reasonable, but still pricey. Initially after checking in I had wanted to grab some McDonalds since that was the only fast food place around here. Unfortunately, "close" was 1 mile, which at the time I didn't mind because I wanted to stretch my legs from the airplane trip. When I arrived however I discovered that the sitting area was under remodeling, and so the only place I could sit down to eat was outside, which was very very cold. Sooo....I gave up on that and turned right back and walked a mile back. I ended up eating some chickent tenders at Bogarts which is a restaurant inside the Muvico Theatre. Unfortunately it came out to $11 after tax =/ and I gave a larger tip than normal because I was the only customer and it seemed like he and the other staff just wanted to close before I showed up.

Next day I was scheduled to meet a trucker to pick out some samples for display from the display cases in New York. At the time in New York it was a brilliant idea, the display cases would be carried by a truck, and so putting our model samples inside the bottom drawers would give them a free ride where we wouldn't worry about UPS damaging them in transit. Of course we forgot the time frame for the truck to make it back to California and so we realized we would have to meet the trucker halfway in Illinois if we were to have anything in our display cases. So yeah, I met up with the trucker, an elderly gentleman by the name of Stan. He claims he's 70 years old. I have to tip my hat off to him since his energy makes him seem a lot younger than that. It took some time to get the samples out of the drawers since they were secured fairly well, but I did manage to get out our shuttle samples as well as other model kits. Stan seems to be even more of a morning person than I am, so I was a little irked that I had to wake up so early to meet him. Of course he had a driving schedule to keep so I did my best to accommodate the limited time available.

I did some set up that day, which consisted mostly of getting our pop-up black backgound as well as setting up the space vehicles. They're actually a little more complicated than they appear especially if you don't have directions. The Apollo 11's modules are all extremely accurate in terms of proportions and molding. It's truly a site to see and I'm sad my camera cannot quite capture that glorious detail. Same applies to the Endeavor. Extremely well crafted and accurate. I wish I had directions to set them up though I so I wouldn't waste time figuring out which connectors go where.

For Dinner that night I met up with some guys from the Gundam Eclipse forum, Mark and John for some food. We ate at a pretty cool pan-asian restaurant. This is the first time I've seen a menu actually include pictures of EVERY item. There were pictures that gave you an item number and you would look up the item number for the name of the dish and the price. Pretty neat.

It was a 45 min train ride to Chinatown however, and I do think I fell asleep. Mark's voice is similar to mine, but there are differences if you meet in person. Talked a lot about Gundam stuff as usual per our nerdiness.

Oh and uh here's a car that was in the shopping center. Kewl.

Wednesday I finished setting up the majority of our booth. In the morning I took a cab ride to a Target to pick up some chairs and misc things. It was a little cumbersome since my transportation was restricted to the cab, but I guess it worked out. The chairs I got were pretty good for that matter. I ended up eating at SubWay while I was over there because I didn't really want to pay for another above $15 meal per the eating places around the convention center. I also didn't want to chance the McDonalds not being open due to the renovation. Of course, I had to find a screw driver to borrow back at our booth to put a chair together, but thankfully I was surrounded by people who were carrying various hardware tools. It actually takes a long time to set up model kit samples mostly because they're all partially disassembled for easy storage. I got to play around with a few things like the HGUC Sinanju; pretty neat kit if you want a more affordable Sinanju.

For those of you who have the Super Robot Chogokin Great Mazinger, how do you avoid getting stabbed? There are a large number of sharp points on him from the red crest across his chest, to the fins on his arms and legs, to his helmet and even his accessories are spikey. The Jet Pilder and Hover Pilder are REALLY loose. I wonder how many people have lost it on their home carpets? Thankfully I forsaw that coming and decided to not dock the pilders inside the head.

Oh I forgot to mention that the Embassy suites has a happy hour starting from 5:30pm at night. Yay for free drinks to get smashed! Though I was disappointed they were restricted on the drinks they could mix. I wanted a Daiquiri or Mint Julep, but they didn't have the the materials to make them or would not make them at all.

The actual show was mind numbingly boring. Though I suppose this is because this is an actual Industry/Business event as opposed to a public offering. It's a place for businesses to attract new retail customers or find distributors to carry their products. We were situated at the far end unfortunately, but we had some nice company with the folks at Hebco, who make the Tenax R7 plastic cement. It's a great alternative to the tamiya thin cement, though I wish their bottles come with the applicator. I guess I would need to save the brush from my Tamiya bottle. This hobby show gives a rather interesting state on hobbies in the U.S. Gundam is virtually unknown within the community. The biggest hobby in the U.S. is currently the RC industry, which is evident based on the sheer number of different RC related companies at the show. I'm fairly certain we were among the few plastic model companies out there. Also Gundam unless you know what it is, is completely foreign to most people. Most of the looks we got were from the assumption that they were seeing "Voltron" "Robotech" or "Transformers." I also never thought I'd see so many variations on how to pronounce "GunPla." We had several good meetings so the entire experience wasn't exactly a waste, which is good.

I did get to see a large number of things including giant RC tanks. Yes, giant RC tanks. I'm sure if you youtube ihobby you'll find someone who took some clips of them moving around. Excuse the poor video offerings from me. On a positive note Gundam seems to be slowly moving mainstream within the hobby industry. Hobby stores are seeing more and more Gundam product selling and less and less of traditional military craft. Though the implications of that trend might be problematic in the future.

All righty! I'm in New York.

My flight got in around 5pm EST, and I waited for about 20 mins for the super shuttle to pick me up. Wow I had forgotten how bad rush hour is, it took about 2 hours to get from Newark airport to the Javitts convention center in New York. Christ I have to get up at 4 am when I leave next week. Anywhoo, the first thing I did was help the others get as much set up done as possible. Still have to set up electric grid and the glas shelves, and oh god....the samples. oh god....it's going to take most of the day to set those up, especially the bandai collectors stuff. Kamen Riders, Kamen Riders EVERYWHERE. Some pictures under the fullpost =D

Prelude to New York

So for anyone that still browses this blog I think the personal cheese part seems to be more prominent lately. Oh well. In any case, New York Comic-Con/New York Anime Festival is days away! What's happening? Well, for Gundam related stuff:

This baby will be on display at the Bluefin/Bandai booth! Well, the rapid prototype anyway that was featured in hobby magazines this month. Now for those of you who are curious, the basic frame of these rapid prototype models is ready to be mass produced. Now there might be some small changes here and there, but for the most part what you see is final. Oh yes the Gundam 00 movie will be shown with Eng subtitles on Sunday. Hope I can get a break shift for that! Other models we will have on display include the HGUC Sinanju, RG Char's Zaku, a whole stew of MG, PG, and HG kits, as well as some other kewl surprises.

Also, the last BAKUC 2010 preliminary comp for the U.S. will be held during this time. Anyone out there who wants to try their hand in a model kit competition come on down! Bring your model to booth 1536 by 3:30pm Saturday! Everyone who enters gets a goody bag! Here's some pictures of 1st place prizes. As always there will be model kit prizes for winners!

Oh man. So let's see, what did I do that first day. I assembled the Taurus Myth Cloth from Saint Seiya, sorted some of our display kits, helped around the warehouse got excited from seeing lots of gunpla products everywhere (still am lol)

And then the following day..."You're going to Comic-Con." Sweeet. Wait, noooooo. See I don't like Comic-Con personally. It's way too congested and I don't find myself enjoying it as a fun outing even with the lure of famous people and potential nerdgasms from autographs. Anime Expo is probably going to be this large and I don't particularly find that very appealing. Still, I met Megumi Nakajima and May'n this year while working AX =D

Anywhoo so Comic-Con was from Wed night to Sunday morning. So we had to leave Tuesday to have enough time to set up. First thing when I come into work Tuesday morning is, "Hey we're kinda short one guy who can drive...can you drive the van?"

I look at the van. Oh man it's one of those big white vans that you see a repair man or cable guy drive. I've never driven a large vehicle as this before. I look back at my boss. "I will drive it." All right time to learn how to drive a party van, go go go go go go. Hop in, follow our giant rental truck down to San Diego. It was a pleasant hour and a half drive. I think I'm pretty confident with manueuvering larger vehicles now, though parking is still somewhat difficult. Upon arriving we started setting up our booth. Now mind you, we had to set up our display cabinets, position the models and collectibles inside them. This is actually a REALLY long process. I didn't have time to take pictures of the convention hall during this time, but holy smokes, it was a concrete circus in there. Thankfully the photos at the end are from my co-workers. Yes I am not in any of the pictures. :p Forklifts going at ramming speed everywhere you turn, loud machine noises, throngs of people scrambling to get their booths up, and the ever present feeling of needing to get as much done before the day was over. It was like this for 2 days. We barely finished setting up everything before preview night.

To be honest most of Comic-Con was a blur. Most of the time I was answering questions about our displays products that people were interested in buying. I do remember getting glimpses of most of the guests. Seth Green was around our booth since Adult Swim was right next to us. I convinced the creator of Aqua Teen Hunger Force to purchase a PG 00 Raiser. That was cool, though I sadly don't have a picture of him. We sold out most of our product we brought along and everyone I met was extremely impressed with the way our booth looked. It was simply amazing. Oh btw, here's a picture of the Night Combat Eva, which just came out in Japan even though we were selling it back in July. And that's a picture of it navigating my co-worker's hair.

What was not amazing was how long it took to tear everything down. We were in San Diego until past 1 am, and when we got home finally it was almost 4 am. Holy crap. Oh yeah and Otakon in a week after. Geeezus. I leave you with the giant table of model kits and figures which he had to painstakingly take down and pack away carefully. You honestly don't know how much time is spent making sure the display models have a safe trip home.

So today I was told this was who I would be working with at Bandai to get the BlueFin website up to speed for our customers.

And for those who don't know yet I now work at BlueFin, the U.S.'s official Gundam and Collectible Distributor. We work directly with Bandai's hobby division to bring gundam models and Robot Spirits figures to stores near you!

While I was working my Press/Industry splot at Anime Expo, I was using our workstation to look at potential jobs for me while applying to nursing school. Unfortunately I had to rule out hospital related jobs since I needed additional certification to do pretty much anything health related. So my friends gave me the idea that since I was particularly passionate about gundam, I should probably look into something anime related even if only for a while. Quick to the dealer's hall where companies are present!

So I met with various companies ranging from retail to wholesale and dropped off contact information and collected business cards. Now the Bluefin booth which has become infamous in recent years for its LARGE quantity of gundam stock at anime cons has always had my attention. I've been getting models from them for years, perhaps even before it was called Bluefin. I'd seen the mostly same crew working the cons I visited so I hustled over. I had also entered the West coast BAKUC division earlier and I inquired with the elderly gentleman and discovered that they were located close to me. Holy crap that's the city next door to me. Sweet. Dropped off my info and collected a business card. The following day I shot an email with my resume over. Got a reply, yay! Next week got a phone call interview. Sweet. That Sunday, "hey you want to come in to check out the warehouse." Fuck yeah!

And the first thing I did at my new job was put the Tauros armor on a Saint Seiya figure because, ComiCon was in 2 days and we had a lot of packing for our display to do.

There are going to be new mobile suits appearing in the novel. Focus will be on their militaristic nature.
The era is called “MC-0002 NEXT WINTER”.
The novel takes place on Mars.
The story takes off from the viewpoint of Sally Po’s daughter, Kathy Po. (Rank is ??!?)
She’s affiliated with Preventer. A subordinate of WuFei (Mars Branch Chief).
She possesses a microchip sent from Earth Sphere Unified Nation President Dorothy T. Catalonia.
She believes it contains information to initiate “Operation Mythos”.
However, Chang WuFei instructed her to download three files aside from the memory chip from a history bank.
Kathy doesn’t understand what good previous century’s data will be.
The file was recorded in the summer and autumn of AC195 and the spring of AC196.
The only common entry the files have is the keyword: “Gundam pilots”.
The Summer AC195 file is believed to have been something wrote by Treize.
Rilke’s “Autumn” is quoted at the beginning and after two lines “That is my eternal friend, Milliardo Peacecraft” was added, but was then crossed out with a line in the end. The contents are like a short essay or a letter.
It is summarized with “I must be a loser to change history” and is signed “TK”.
The next file is Autumn AC195 in which transfer student “Duo Maxwell” reads an essay on the theme of the relations between the Earth and its colonies.
The final file is Spring AC196. The recorder is Kathy’s mother, Sally.
Data on conversation between Relena and an elderly person are on the file.
The file contains other attached data aside from the sound.
It’s the blueprints and operations manual for “frozen capsules for artificial hibernation”.
The blueprints are signed “J”.
When she arrived at the Preventer’s Mars Arctic Base (north pole), Kathy went straight to Master Chang (WuFei), who resides there alone.
She informs of being handed down the authorization of “Operation Mythos” and suggests the awakening of the Aurora Princess.
The “sleeping beauty” is sealed in a frozen capsule for artificial hibernation.
A voice is heard behind Kathy, “You’re just like your mother.”
Appearing was a middle aged man in black priests clothes with a young boy with long hair tied in a braid.
The middle-aged man who appeared at random was nothing but smiles. “I’m Father Maxwell. The Father Maxwell who may run and hide, but never tells a lie. And this brat with the unpleasant eyes is my son, Duo.”
The priest brings special attention to Kathy, “By the way, I do hope that you brought three files with you. The three preludes are needed to awaken the Aurora Princess.”

Let's see I have my final exams for my physiology course this week, along with looking up information sessions for nursing schools. Suffice to say I have barely enough time to work on this. Man I shouldn't even be writing this, but oh well. Okay first off I'll describe the modification I did to the shoulders. This gives it some additional mobility by allowing the shoulder axis to go move vertically upward as well as swing out horizontally. The effect of this increases the arm movement which is important for mimicking human body motion. I still haven't figured out a good pose yet, though the display stand I made for it somewhat limits my choices.

The two halves of the upper torso are held in place by your normal peg assembly, and also by the connection to the abdomen, which is a separate assembly (white). I noticed that the large male pegs that keep the torso together also double as a rotational point for the ever plentiful PC A (sometimes PC C) polycap. So I chopped it off, along with a sizeable amount of the female end and super glued that in place. Then I took your average credit card and enclosed the polycap. Not much time to work on Airmaster at the moment because of school. Here are some things I did recently. A lot of kits have certain areas that will eventually be covered by other parts, like the shoulder guards. This makes it extremely difficult to paint. So the solution is a Hobby Japan technique that's featured in almost every tip they use.

As you can see, there is a "C" on the piece on the left side. The male peg can now slide into that space from the side. Here's another picture for the wings. The red portion of the wings can now be painted separately and inserted into the 2 halves.

Here's a schematic showcasing this. Normally the wings are composed of 3 parts. The red portion is sandwiched in the middle between 2 white pieces. Using the C joint mod, the white part can be assembled first, and the red portion can simply be inserted in. This allows SUPER easy painting without masking.

Quick update today!

So the hands are composed of 2 halves with some interesting molding detail on them. Uh...okay, if I fix that seam those details will disappear. Hmmmah what will I do?

So! I'll get rid of ALL the detail and rescribe it!

Righto, so I had to put back the detail I sanded off. No prob. I traced the shape out on some paper, then taped it to some plastic card and cut it out with a knife.

Voila!

Comparison of my first arm on the left, and the new arm on the right. The joint was originally too long and gave a rather weird appearance. Right side also shows how much better the guy looks with a longer neck.

Now I just have to add details to the joint. CycloneX suggests I use the semi-circular sprues, so I'll have to see how that goes. I will also have to prime this to see how off the axis is.

I also now have a schematic in case anyone wants to replicate this:

The holes use a 7/64 size drill bit and are the right size to use plastic sprue.

Speaking of which. The quality of this Airmaster is pretty bad. There were a lot of instances of flash on the parts trees and it looks like various panel lines are not as deep as they should be.

Wow this 4 hour lab on Tues/Thurs is really exhausting. It's interesting though since it's a technical course that utilizes various machinery like an oscilloscope.

Arms!!!!! part 1

Ha, no updates for a week because I've been busy perfecting my joint substitution trick. Photo below is the prototype I first came up with. It was a little on the thin side, but had a large range of movement compared to the original polycap arm. New one looks slightly different from this.

Essentially, my arm joint consists of credit card plastic, with the shiny stuff/magnetic bar sanded off. A shell is constructed, while the cavity is filled with epoxy putty. 2 sets of holes are made to allow a rod to pass through. The top uses the kit's own molded rod, while the bottom is simply inserted

The rod is a sprue from the plastic tree the parts were cut from. I'm using one of the ABS plastic trees from another kit, since I don't trust this kit's plastic. More on this later...

Buster Rifles 2, Neck

The neck is SCRAWNY.

So I'll just add a few more layers after determining the height roughly with a pin. Then, just add some credit card plastic to extend the height.

After some putty, Voila!

The little holsters for the guns on the side are really loose. They pop out quite easily, so I'm going to make them a bit more secure by inserting a pin in the hole. And there happens to be a convenient depression inside the holster for the pin to go in.

So I drilled a hole using my pin vise, and then proceeded to use staples as my "pin."

To figure out where the pin would fit on the gun, I coated the end of the pin with some vaseline after inserting it in the holster. I then placed the gun in there. Where the vaseline appeared is where I would drill the other hole.

First order of business is to modify the muzzle. Normally, they come the tip filled in when clearly it's supposed to be an open space. So using my trusty pin vise, I poke a few holes and then have my hobby knife make the slit.

Rising Gundam In Progress

I spent the last hour and a half using a needle to cut this in half because the saws I have are way too big. Yes a needle.

Here I separated the torso to insert a ball joint, and also added pegs so the thighs can rotate.

Here I inserted some ball joints for the arms and also inserted a plsticard with a hole in order to put the torso ball joint. The space for the upper torso to move was too large so I filled some of it with epoxy putty.

I swapped out the arm for one from an WZC model and also modified its bicep to be able to rotate.

Extended the length of the naginata by cutting out a sprue from the parts tree and attaching using a pin and super glue.

Made the eyes appear more menacing by adding epoxy putty to the top of its brow.

There are panel lines missing on these pieces for some reason, I had to painstakingly scribe them in.

And finally, I added detail parts in various areas.

Starting Virsago

I remember when I first saw this, the first thing that came to my mind was "oh lol wut Epyon and Altron had a bastard love child." HG 1/100 Wing Gundam Review

The HG 1/100 Wing Gundam was released a few months after Gundam Wing hit the airwaves in Japan. Using a similar type of polycap system as the previous franchise, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, the model is able to replicate basic movement as in the tv show. The kit itself however, is built differently than the other kits in the 1/100 HG Gundam Wing line due to the bird mode transformation that the actual Gundam uses.

Head

The head consists of 2 helmet halves, a polycap for movement, V fin, plus the eye and chin piece.

The classic gundam faceplate is molded into the front helmet piece, and appears to be very accurate to its anime counterpart. The eye stickers provided don't seem to lineup with the plastic piece for some reason. In fact, it appears that an eye sticker for another Gundam was packaged. V fin is molded in a gold shiny finish. The head is able to rotate 360 degrees on this model because of the transformation gimmick. Unfortunately, the head is set too low, giving it a rather dorky appearance from certain angles.

Torso

The abdomen and upper torso are both composed of 2 halves, with the seams on the sides. A polycap is in the abdomen so the body can rotate. A green eye jewel sticker is provided for the search eye, and 3 gold pieces make up the yellow trim.

Legs

The legs house a somewhat complicated system for the transformation. Using a double joint, the legs can unbind itself from the knee allowing the thruster assembly to become exposed. The legs can then go over the thruster assembly and fold its feet. Unfortunately, let movement is very limited. The legs cannot fully bend all the way at the knee and the design of the foot prevents the leg from leaning forward.

Arms

The arms on this kit are somewhat complicated, not only because of the transformation system, but also because the shoulder is composed of more than just 2 pieces. For some reason, Bandai thought that putting clear green pieces inside the shoulder would serve some sort of purpose. They aren't polycaps, so the plastic will eventually loosen from the plastic rubbing against each other. They aren't visible, so a neon effect is out of the question. They are there to make the shoulder female opening accept the smaller male pegs on the arm. The hole could have just been resized to accommodate the arm like on the other kits…

The lower arm itself tries to replicate the Wing Gundam's bird mode claws. After watching the transformation on screen a number of times, it appears that the model used some shortcuts. The hands on the kit swivel under the arm, where a compartment opens up to house them. In the show, they are simply just slid back into the recesses of the arm. The talons only position themselves 90 degrees from their resting place, whereas in the show they can be positioned almost all the way to where the hand existed.

These talons also impede movement of the arm, and so the elbow can only bend less than 90 degrees before the talons touch the upper arm.

The left arm has a peg for the shield, whereas the Wing appeared to have been holding it all the time in the animation or had an invisible hard point.

The hands provided with the kit are very small, in fact they don't match the other hands in the G Gundam, Gundam Wing, and Gundam X series of kits. Also, there is no ball joint at the end, only a peg, allowing rotation, but not angular movement.

Weapons/Backpack

The kit cannot hold its main weapon the buster rifle. The weight of the weapon goes against the little polycap enabling the bird mode gimmick causing the whole hand to sag downward. It also has problems holding the beam saber, which is a long piece of clear green plastic. Also, there exists no compartment for said saber when not in use, even though it should be in the shield.

Like all other kits during this era, there are an excessive number of panel lines, most artificial, hiding the original panel lines thus making the kit appear overly detailed. The panel lines do not enhance the scale’s details however, since a lot of the lines were made to connect points to make polygonal or triangular panels. This is pretty prevalent on the wings, which also has clear green pieces to simulate extreme speed (?).

The kit is average at best, and will look fairly good if built out of the box without any mods. Some may feel the need to fix certain things with the kit to match what they saw on TV.

Super Glue Talc Filler

In those often rare cases where our modeling supplies run out before becoming aware of it, some of us still want to continue. What do we do? Improvise. Of course...I was using this for a while before my parents agreed to let me buy some hobby putty. In retrospect, I think they were afraid I was trying to get high on the putty. In any case, the following is a really cheap substitute. You need the following materials:

Ah yes, any baby powder will work....it doesn't have to be Lavender scent. So anyway, for this tutorial, I'll be using one of the 1/100 HG Gundam Wing kit hands. They're generic, and are ugly with that nasty seam line down the back of the hand. Yeah, and I didn't do a clean cut when getting them out of the parts trees either. Now, you'll notice though how obvious that line is down the middle. You try painting over that and you'll find that the line will be made more visible. So yeah, we need to cover it up. Taking the two parts check out where the seam line would appear when the parts are assembled. Usually, it will be the areas that don't have a hollow portion as seen in the picture on the left. When you glue, make sure you're putting enough so that the glue will ooze out, but not so much that the entire tube empties out. Depending on your glue, it may dry pretty fast so make sure you have the parts already to go for assembly. Otherwise, in your haste to get the parts together you may find yourself getting glue all over your hands and becoming distraught at the amount of skin being torn. Super glue should bond pretty easily, but still push the pieces together just to make sure. You should have something that looks like this. This part is now ready for sanding. What...where's where's the baby powder come in...you're asking. Actually, I'm going to show why just using super glue alone as a filler is a bad idea. And then repair the process. Depending on the super glue you have, it's possible that it won't sand very well. So what if it doesn't sand well? This is how you get misshapen pieces. The sanding you're doing is so the glue line is level with the plastic, thus eliminating the seam. However, if the glue doesn't sand as easily as the plastic, then the plastic will wear down faster and your piece will no longer have its original shape. That is bad! Normally, this is why you mix the powder in with the glue. The powder will alter the properties of the glue making it less brittle, and more easily sandable. However in the event that there's still a hole you can still use some sort of powder/glue mixture. See, after sanding with only super glue it looks right, right? However if you put powder on top and it sticks, then you know there's still some gap of some sort. See? There's still somewhat of a gap on the lower portion of the back hand. Also, the area I messed up on when I cut the part from the tree is still very visible. Where the white powder is right now would show up when I paint the hand. That is bad, and is very very unprofessional looking. So then, this can still be remedied. No w...Dump more powder on the hand and blow at it. If done right the powder in the crevice should remain while the excess flies off. Now apply the glue and mix it in with the powder. All righty...now sand the sucker.

Excellent. Now when you go about painting, that seam is gone brotha, and you now have a very nice looking hand.

1/100 HG Wing Gundam In-Progress

So...one of the things I've wanted to do for a long time now is try my hand at extending parts. I tried it out with the Wing's shield and ended up liking it. The first problem was finding out how to cut the plastic off to perform the surgery. Being the stereotyped poor college student, I couldn't afford a pin vise...so...I improvised. Taking a broken mechanical pencil, I glued a sewing needle into the area where the lead would normally be. Voila! Poor whale's cutting utensil and scriber! I carefully traced one of the existing panel lines on the shield to get an indentation, and then proceeded to go through the indentation several times. Each pass grounded up a bit of the plastic until I reached the other side. Granted this does take off more plastic than what was originally separated on the panel line, but I didn't have a knife with me when I was doing it.

For the extensions I used the leftover plastic on the parts tree, cut them into several rods of equal length and glued them on the underside of the shield.

After joining the two parts, I put some of this Quikplastik stuff I got at Home Depot to cover the gap. I think it's plumber's epoxy putty.

The picture was a reference for me to see how it turned out. It turns out that I didn't put an equal amount, causing the top to have an extension and depression and the sides to be caved in. I believe I fixed it after these pictures were taken.

I added ball joint to the torso area.

The year draws ever closer to a close. I find it humerous that I barely posted on this bit of space. Perhaps I'll post some more now. I was able to get my yearbook some John Hancocks and Da Vincis. I still need to sign some other people's yearbooks as well. Speaking of which, Grace wrote Chikan all over one of the pages. I love how my parents don't know what that means. I just said it said awesome.

So here's something odd that happened to me. My family had come to Hometown Buffet in separate cars. We decided that I would leave in my dad's car. So, at the end of the meal, Dad had to go use the restroom and mom took that opportunity to leave. She gave me the key to the van so I could recline in the back seat. Of course thinking that my dad would come out immediately, I decided to wait instead. 10 mins passed and I thought, hmmah, damn he's taking a crap. So I waltzed over out of the restaurant to open the car up.

Um shit. The van's gone!!! WHAAAT?! I rush back into Hometown Buffet's bathroom. Crap he's gone!!!! WTF!?!?!?! Umm...shit. Mmmmkay. I'll just call home and leave a message that I've been left behind. lol lol lol. At the same time I was thinking, I think I saw this movie before!

So, I called at 4:39pm and ended up waiting until 5:22pm for my mom to arrive. She was so pissed off since she just arrived home to find out I wasn't around. Apparantly dad had somehow missed me when he left the restroom and drove right off thinking I had decided to go in Mom's car.

lol. I must have acquired enough volatile inhalents from all the passing cars and smokers around the area I was sitting in. Lung cancer, here I come(I hope not)!

On another note, I've discovered an idea for how to do my Deathscythe. I'll see if I can pull it off this weekend.

I have this very elaborate plan for the Deathscythe, which I shall reveal, soon. How soon? Uh...I'll get back to you on that.

Yesterday, on Chinese New Year's eve, my mom and I got into an accident. In the middle of a left turn mom asked me to look at the price of the gas on the side. I didn't know that she was looking too. -_-; So, we're turning and then I see headlights coming our way. O_o. Oh shi-! A loud scraping sound reverberates through the ears of the onlookers on the sidewalk as it grazes the left corner of our car and passes through the intersection. My mom becomes emotionally unstable muttering things about why she had to get hit on New Year's Eve, that it's a bad omen, that she's getting old, etc. etc. Meanwhile, I turn around trying to make out the license plate of the SUV that hit us. Thankfully the guy had stopped and I make out a 7RH before the guy speeds off. Whut? We're at fault here, why the hell did you speed off for? Mmmkay. This is one of those times I wish I had a cell phone with me.

School Status

As finals week draws near, I have come to the conclusion that I shall receive "B" grades plus the guaranteed "A" for Japanese. Ah, Japanese. Thank god I'm taking that class. It seems ironic that the class I barely do anything in is the one that will get the highest grade. Good grief! Unfortunately for my other classes, it seems to be the case that no matter how hard I study, I cannot get any tangible results. Oh well, hopefully the colleges won't consider it that much. I may smack myself silly if I'm rejected because of a stupid thing like that.

On another note, Providence has been shelved. I can work on it another time, but there are more pressing matters of concern. I've been trying out some arm modifications for the Deathscythe Hell, but errr school is getting in the way. I'm still trying to create a workable torso joint, but it isn't likely to come into fruition any time soon.

I recall during elementary school, Christmas Break was the most wonderful thing ever. You got 2 weeks off to screw around and to have fun. What am I doing now? Writing scholarship essays and doing extra credit for school. How lame.

On another note, I'm working on the Providence recolor right now as well as my Deathscythe Hell mod. I'm thinking of doing the MG Gundam in ceremonial colors and the Sanrdrock as Operation Meteor colors.

I awoke today, dreadful of the results of STATS and BIO. Last week after taking the exams, I felt absolutely horrible. I thought I failed!

To my surprise, Mr. Rod scaled down the test and I got a B on it! w00t! And I missed 3 on Bio. Sweet. Me happy.

My teacher recs got done today too. I'm going to show Sawaya my college essay tomorrow. I pray to God he doesn't think I'm an English n00b.

I awoke this morning to the sound of Jazz music from the radio. I didn't turn the alarm clock off last night. That was around 5 am this morning. So, I went back to bed and woke up for real at 7:54. After eating and doing some floor sweeping I watched a little FMP on Anime Network before settling in to do some college app work.

I looked up around 10 mins ago to see a nice overcast. The shades of grey surrounding the sky and the trees gave me a an unsettling feeling of rain, but like other California days, there probably won't be any rain.

I hope I have some work to do at the hospital later today, but all the same, I could use the down time to study some Japanese.

Thankfully SAT and the other tests are done. Hopefully I'll get the Shenlong completed page done later tonight.

Well, it seems I've gotten time to update this. I don't know what to do really. I guess a blog is like an online journal. Bleh, I don't know how to do HTML yet, so the background will have to suffice for the moment. I'm on spring break now. That's a good thing. I'm planing to work on my gundam models and also play Zero Hour on the comp. Bleh, I need to finish the Comp Sci program too.
